Short Orienteering Race in
Staithes

This is the second race of the Autumn Short Race Series held between October and December 2019.

Newcomers to orienteering:   Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!

Location:

Staithes is on the north-east coast, 10 miles north-west of Whitby and 5 miles east of Loftus.  The event will be signed from the A174 at grid reference NZ 779181.

Parking and Assembly will in the public car park in Staithes at grid reference NZ 781185.  The nearest postcode is TS13 5BB.

This is a 'pay and display' car park.  Please ensure that you purchase – and display! – a ticket valid for the appropriate time.

Terrain:

Small seaside village with narrow streets and passageways, steps and some short steep hills.

Specific hazards: Stone steps that are slippery when wet.  Slippery rocks on the shore.  Light traffic on the access road through the village.  Members of the public ambling in narrow passages.

Please be considerate to other people and respect private / out-of-bounds places as shown on map.

Courses:

There will be three courses available, each with a winning time of about 15 minutes:-
>>  Juniors (M/W14-);
>>  Youth / Vets (M/W18- and M/W55+); and
>>  Open

Map:

Scale 1:3,000   Size A4   The courses will be overprinted on the maps, which will be printed on waterproof paper.

Please note that if there is an unexpectedly large entry you may be asked to recycle your map so that others can run.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and available separately.

Punching system:

This event will use SPORTident electronic punching.  The controls (but not the Start and Finish boxes) will be enabled for touch-free SIAC punching.

If you have your own SI-card then please bring it along to Registration.

SI-cards (non-SIAC) will be available to borrow on the day at no charge.  Please look after yours, as there will be a £20 charge for any lost SI-card.

Times: Registration: 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Starts: 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Courses close at 11:30 a.m.
Entries:

Seniors on the Medium or Long course  £4.00
Seniors on the Short course:  £1.50
Juniors (M/W20-) and Students (with ID):  £1.50

You can run a second course for free, but if you intend to do this please try to start your first run early, and make sure you register again so we know who is still out.

There is no need to pre-enter for this event, but if you are bringing a group then please contact the Organiser in advance so that we can print enough maps.

Facilities:

First Aid at Registration.

There are public toilets available next to the parking area.

No drinks will be provided at the Finish, but there are lots of places in Staithes where you can get food, drink and ice creams.

Staithes is a lovely village on the North Sea coast, with a harbour and all the usual visitor attractions.  Stay after your run and enjoy the views and the atmosphere.

Dogs: Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the car parking area, but are not allowed on the courses.

Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

CLOK recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

If you have a relevant medical condition please complete a form at Registration.

Lone drivers: Please leave your labelled car keys at Registration as a safety check.

Insurance: Please note that if you have competed in three orienteering events registered with British Orienteering and you have not joined an orienteering club which is a member of British Orienteering then you are not covered by our public liability insurance.
