Although most of the Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed, the pandemic is not yet over, and the wave of Omicron infections is a significant concern.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of Covid-19 transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Given that:-

  • You must not come to this (or any other) event if you have Covid-19 symptoms or if should be self-isolating in accordance with Government guidance.
  • Please maintain effective social distancing, including from the Registration team.  At this event, please don't gather in the Registration area.  Only one person should approach the Registration table at any time.
  • Before and after your run, avoid unnecessary close contact with people outside your household.
  • Wear a face mask when you are indoors and there are other people around.  At this event, please wear a face mask when you register and, if possible, when you come to hand in your control card after your run.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.

Parking is in the Iron Horse pub car park in Newton Aycliffe.  The entrance to the car park is off Simpasture Gate at grid reference NZ 274244.  The What3words reference is ///blur.patio.nodded and the postcode is DL5 5HQ.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

If the pub car park is full, please park along Simpasture Gate.

Registration is in the Iron Horse pub.  See the aerial photograph on the right.

Registration location

Urban area.

Important notes:

  • You will need to cross a busy main road.  Take care!
  • Anyone under 16 on the day of the event must be accompanied by an adult.

Please bring:

  • A torch – preferably a head torch.
  • Hi-viz clothing so that you can be seen while you're running ..... particularly by drivers, but also by pedestrians.
  • A pen to write the numbers on your control card.  (See the Format section below.)
  • A watch that you can use to time your 45 minutes.  Please note that this event will be self-timed.  We are trusting participants to report their total running times accurately.

45 minute score.

Visit as many as controls as you can within the 45-minute time limit.  Each control is worth 10 points.  If you exceed the time limit you will lose 5 points for each minute or part minute that you are late getting to the Finish.

Score events involve the extra challenges of (a) deciding the best sequence of controls to visit and (b) judging whether you have time to visit that one last control and still get back to the Finish in time to avoid losing points due to lateness.

Each control is at a lamp post.  Each lamp post is identified by a number (3 or 4 digits).  The control card gives the first 1 or 2 digits for each control.  You need to write the rest of the digits in the relevant box on the control card.  For example, if the lamp post number at control #4 is 6789 then box 4 on the control card will be labelled 67 and you need to write down 89 in that box.

Please note that there may be multiple lamp posts close to the control.  The dot in the centre of the control circle on the map marks the exact location of the lamp post.  This should, for example, let you see which side of the road the lamp post is on.

The map will be a Street-O map from the Open Orienteering web site.  The map shows roads, footpaths and open areas (both rough and grass), but it is not a standard urban orienteering map.

You can use this link to view a blank map.

Registration will be open 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.

Starts will be 6 p.m. – 6.45 p.m.

The Start and Finish are at the entrance to the Iron Horse pub car park.

As it is a 45 minute score event, everyone should be finished by 7.30 p.m.

When you register, you will receive a map and a control card.

As precautions against transmission of Covid-19, please:

  • Send one member of your household to register for all the participating household members.
  • Do not gather in the Registration area.  Only one person should approach the Registration table at a time.
  • Wear a face mask when you are at the Registration table.
