Covid-19:

Although most of the Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed, the pandemic is not yet over, and the wave of Omicron infections is a significant concern.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of Covid-19 transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Given that:-

  • You must not come to this (or any other) event if you have Covid-19 symptoms or if should be self-isolating in accordance with Government guidance.
  • Please maintain effective social distancing, including from the Event Organisation team.  At this event, please don't gather in the Visitor Centre.  Only one person should approach the Event Organisation table at any time.
  • Before and after your run, avoid unnecessary close contact with people outside your household.
  • Wear a face mask when you are indoors and there are other people around.  At this event, please wear a face mask whenever you are in the Visitor Centre.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
Location:

Parking will be at the public car park at Flatts Lane Country Park.  The best approach for most people will be via the A171 (between Marton and Guisborough).  Turn left (if heading east) or right (if heading west) on to Flatts Lane, which is signposted Flatts Lane Country Park.  It is also possible to get to the event from Normanby High Street.

The Country Park entrance is at grid reference NZ 552167 and the What3words reference is ///rabble.reward.parts.  The postcode is TS6 0NN.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can switch to Satellite mode and zoom in to see the details of the final approach to the car park.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

Parking space is limited, so please share transport if possible.

Event organisation will be in the Flatts Lane Country Park Visitor Centre.

Terrain: Well established wood on the lower slopes of the Eston Hills.  There are an extensive network of paths and many features.  The wood is used by local people from the surrounding area, and runners should take this into consideration when taking part in this event.
Format:

This is a Team Score event with a difference.  The event is for teams of 3, but all entries are welcome – we will make up ad hoc teams from single person and pair entries.  This team event is suitable for all ages.

There are 3 courses, and each team will need to select one of their members for each course.  The courses are 30, 45 and 60 minutes score courses.  (If you are not familiar with score courses, see below for an explanation.)

As shown below, the 30 minutes course will attract a higher points value per control than the 45 minutess course which, in turn, will attract more points per control than the 60 minutes course.  Teams will need to evaluate the best use of their members to maximise their final points total.

  • 30 minutes course – 15 points per control
  • 45 minutes course – 12 points per control
  • 60 minutes course – 10 points per control

All competitors will use the same map (showing all the controls) and will have the option of visiting the same set of controls ..... although, as explained above, the number of points earned by visiting each control will depend on which of the three courses you're doing.

Penalties will be incurred in the form of lost points   20 points for each minute or part minute for each late finisher in your team.

On completion of their course each competitor should punch the Finish and go straight to download as soon as they get there.  There is no need to wait for your other team members before punching at the Finish.

Fancy dress is encouraged.  Extra points will be awarded for fancy dress.

Note:  In a Score event there is no pre-defined sequence of controls to be visited.  The aim is to collect as many points as possible by visiting controls in any order that you choose.  You lose points if you take longer than the specified time limit, so deciding which controls to visit and in which order is an important element of the event.

Map:

1:7,500 scale.   A4 size.   Updated in 2019 using Lidar by Paul Taylor and re-surveyed by Dennis Hooton.

The maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map, and loose copies will also be available.

Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used at this event.

SI-cards will not be available for hire on the day.  However, SI-card hire can be prearranged.  To reserve a hired SI-card, please contact the Organiser (contact details below) no later than Thursday 6‑Jan‑2022.  The £1.00 hire charge will be added to your entry fee.  You can collect your hired SI-card – which will be in an envelope labelled with your name – from Event Organisation (in the Visitor Centre) before your run.  Please remember to return it as you download.  There will be a £20 charge if you lose your hired SI-card.

Timings:

Please note that, due to Covid and unlike previous New Year Team Score events, there will not be mass starts.  Each course will have a start block, and you will need to punch at the SI start box.  Please maintain social distancing in the pre-start area and when you punch to start.
