Most of the Organiser's job is actually done before the day of the event. With a group of willing and experienced helpers to see everything runs smoothly, the Organiser can usually just step in to do any "fire-fighting" in case of emergencies.
Things were different at Cod Beck today. Everything proceeded as planned, but we had to literally fire-fight. Yes, some people had obviously had a fire in the woods the day before and it was still burning underground about 30 metres from the Assembly Area. Several of us tried to put it out, but the more we stamped on it the more it smoked in the moss and peaty undergrowth. Eventually we called the fire brigade, who came to help with buckets of water from the reservoir, but that was not enough, and a fire tender was called. The moss and peat had to be raked off and the area flooded before it could be declared safe.
With everything else running like clockwork, we had lots of people saying they had enjoyed the courses. So, well done and thanks to everybody who planned, controlled and helped on the day.
