Parking space is limited, so please share transport if possible.

Event organisation (including Download) will be in the Flatts Lane Country Park Visitor Centre.

Terrain:

Well established wood on the lower slopes of the Eston Hills.  There are an extensive network of paths and many features.

Please be considerate towards other users of the country park.  In particular, please watch out for horses, give them plenty of space and take care not to startle them.

Format:

If you aren't familiar with the Score event format ......

In a conventional orienteering event each course consists of a set list of controls that have to be visited in the specified order.  In a Score event there are controls scattered around the competition area and you have to visit as many as you can within the time limit.  Each control has a points value – in this event all the controls are worth 10 points.  You have to decide which controls to visit in which order within the time limit.  If you exceed the time limit you start losing points – in this event the penalty for lateness is 20 points (equivalent to two controls!) for each minute or part minute that you are late getting to the Finish.

Score events involve the extra challenges of (a) deciding the best sequence of controls to visit and (b) judging whether you have time to visit that one last control and still get back to the Finish in time to avoid losing points due to lateness.

Note: Unlike CLOK's New Year Team Score event, this event is for individuals rather than teams and there will not be any mass starts.

Courses:

60 minute score, 40 minute score and Yellow (linear) course

There will be around 27 - 30 controls on the score courses.  (The exact number has still to be finalised.  Check this web page nearer the time of the event for an update.)

Map:

1:7,500 scale.   A4 size.   Updated in 2019 using Lidar by Paul Taylor and re-surveyed by Dennis Hooton.

The maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map, and loose copies will also be available.

Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

SI-cards will not be available for hire on the day.  However, SI-card hire can be prearranged.  You can reserve a hired SI-card via Racesignup when you put in your entries.  There will be a £1.00 hire charge.  Please collect your hired SI-card from Download before your run and return it as you download after your run.  Take care of your hired SI-card, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.

Covid-19
and other
respiratory
infections:

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate at high levels in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

  • Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download after your run.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle while participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
