Cleveland Orienteering Klub invites you to the "Acorn" National Event in Silton Forest on Sunday 19th March 2023 |
Location: |
Silton Forest is less than 2 miles from the A19. If you are coming from the south, you may wish to consider travelling north to the junction with the A684, where it's possible to cross under the A19, as this avoids a right turn across the dual carriageway. The event will signed from the centre of Over Silton. The postcode is YO7 2LJ and the What3words reference is ///confirms.skate.purifier. From there, please drive carefully though the village and follow signs into the forest along a gently sloping dolomite track. Click on the link to see a map. You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event. You can also get directions if you specify your starting location. Parking will be on the verges of a wide forest track. Please park as directed by the parking marshall. Enquiries / Download / toilets will be at What3words reference ///appoints.amuse.target. You should be parked no more than about 500 metres from Enquiries.
Terrain: |
Updated and expanded Silton Forest is a large working forest sited on the Western edge of the North York Moors. It spans two large spurs and rises from the Silton villages up the scarp slope to Hambleton End and Thimbleby Moor. It consists of both coniferous and deciduous forest areas and has recently been thinned by harvesting operations. (The courses have been planned to avoid these areas.) There are some excellent rock features. The forest has forestry tracks and some mountain bike routes but otherwise has few walking paths. Off the tracks and paths, the wood is rather wild and sees little footfall. In recent years, clear felling has taken place, and the felled areas have re-wilded with gorse, brambles and self-seeded trees overlying brashings. In other words, these areas are wholly unpleasant for orienteering. This event has been planned using different parts of the forest to those used previously in order to maximise the use of mature (and some nicely runnable) areas, and to offer route choices around the clear fell or dense immature forest. The mild winter has left brambles and dead bracken unusually high, and for this reason we suggest you wear full body cover (i.e., arms covered too). You can view the map from the most recent previous event (May 2016) on RouteGadget.

Starts: |
Updated and expanded 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Courses close at 2:30 p.m. The two starts are close together, around 1km from Enquiries / Download. The route is mildly undulating but predominantly downhill. Allow 15 minutes for the walk, plus time to warm up and check in with the Start officials. The route to the start will be taped. Maps will also be available where the route leaves the Enquiries / Download area. These will hopefully provide some useful immersion into the terrain before you run. Covid-19 and other respiratory infections: |
Covid 19 and other infections e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate at high levels in the community. Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport. However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities. Please:-
