Summer Series event in
Rockwell Nature Reserve

This is the first of four Summer Series events taking place between May and July 2023.

As an experiment, there will be limited entries on the day.  If you would like to take advantage of this:-

  • Phone the Organiser (01642-279668) to check map availability.
  • Once the Organiser has confirmed that there is a map available for you, put in your entry via Racesignup (and pay the entry fee).
  • When you come to the event, bring your SI card to Download before your run and go through a dibbing entry process.  This is because the entry data you put into Racesignup will not have been transferred to the computer at the event.

Please note that we will not be accepting cash payments at the event.

Location:

Rockwell Nature Reserve (which used to be called Skerne Valley Park) is in the north-eastern part of Darlington.

Parking will be at the side of the road on Riverside Way and Salters Avenue.  Please park considerately.  The nearest postcode is DL1 2BG, and the the What3words reference of the entrance to the competition area is ///boss.vibrate.desks.

Download and Enquiries will be a short distance south of the junction between Riverside Way, Salters Avenue and Hutton Avenue (see the What3Words reference above).

Terrain:

Rockwell Nature Reserve is mainly open grassland with small groups of trees and bushes.  There is a good network of tarmac paths, and the River Skerne runs through the middle of the area.  Please note that the river must only by crossed by the two bridges.

The Long and Medium courses venture outside of the reserve into the adjoining residential streets.

Anyone under the age of 16 on the day of the event who wishes to run the Long or Medium course must be accompanied by an adult.  The Short course stays within the nature reserve.

Map:

1:5,000 scale   A4 size   Recently mapped by Phill Batts.

The maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the old-fashioned way at the Start and Finish.

SI-cards will not be available for hire on the day.  However SI-card loan (free of charge) can be pre-arranged.  If you need one, please request an SI-card when you put in your entry via the Racesignup online entry system.  You can collect your loan SI-card from Download before your run.  Please return it when you download after your run .... and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.

Entries:

There will be no Registration at the event and no entry on the day.  If you wish to participate in this event you must pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.

The entry deadline is midnight on Friday 26‑May‑2023.

Second run: You can run a second course for free, subject to map availability.  Register when you download after your first run.

Seniors on Long or Medium:    £5.00
Seniors on Short:£2.00
Juniors / Students:£2.00 
Starts:

4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.       Courses close at 7:30 p.m.

The Start and Finish will both be close to the junction between Riverside Way, Salters Avenue and Hutton Avenue.

Facilities:

PLEASE NOTE that there will be no toilets at this event.

No drinks will be provided.  Please bring your own refreshments.

First aid at Download.

Dogs: Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event and can be taken out into the competition area, but must be kept on leads at all times.

Covid-19
and other
respiratory
infections:

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate at high levels in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

  • Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

Lone drivers: Please leave your labelled car keys at Download as a safety check.

CLOK recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.
