CLOK logo

This is the third of four Summer Series events taking place between May and July 2023.

Location:

Coatham Dunes are on the North Sea coast just west of Redcar.

The first choice for parking will be in the Cleveland Golf Club car park.    The grid reference of the entrance to the car park is NZ 591252, the postcode is TS10 5BJ and the What3words reference is ///grace.price.robots.

We need to leave space for golf club members to park, so if the golf club car park looks as if it's getting full then please park in the public car park off Majuba Road.  The grid reference of the entrance to the car park is NZ 489142, the postcode is TS10 5BJ and the What3words reference is ///lunch.rocks.gets.  We suggest that you park in the western part of this car park, as the competition area is to the west of the car park.  According to the Redcar & Cleveland Council web site, the parking charges between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. are £1 for 1 hour, £2 for 2 hours, £3 for 3 hours or £4 for all day.

Click on the link(s) to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

Please note that there will be no orienteering signs to this event.

Terrain:

Sand, Sea and Sky

All courses are on soft sand dunes, sandwiched between the sea and the golf course, both of which are out of bounds!  Don't be surprised if your shoes are full of sand at the end of your run.

The dunes are vegetated by a superb variety of plants, which attract a unique fauna of birds and invertebrates.  Some of the plants can be a bit unfriendly – the Marram Grass is slightly prickly and the Sea Buckthorn is very prickly – but neither offer any real problems.

There are some well established paths, which are clearer the further you are from the beach.  In order to keep the contour features clearly visible on the map, some of the paths through the dunes have not been marked.  There are lots of these small paths through the dunes.

Safety

Old ruined fences in the north-west part of the area are marked on the map but are not always obvious in real life, so be careful to watch out for any barbed wire on the ground.

'Party time' on the dunes close to the beach and the town has resulted in occasional hazardous litter such as bottles and cans.

The area is popular with dog walkers.  Please be courteous toward them and any other members of the public you encounter during your run.

Courses:
Course  Length    Climb
Long3.1 km90mTD4+ (Think 'Light Green +')
Medium  2.3 km80mTD4+ (Think 'Light Green +')
Short2.1 km50mTD3+ (Think 'Orange +')

When selecting your course, please be aware that orienteering on detailed sand dunes can be particularly challenging and if you aren't experienced you may be quite slow.  If in doubt, play safe.

Covid-19
and other
respiratory
infections:

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate at high levels in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

  • Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

Lone drivers: Please leave your labelled car keys at Download as a safety check.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
