Cleveland Orienteering Klub and Eborienteers invite you to the White Rose Classic Distance orienteering event in Pickering Forest on Sunday 27th August 2023 |
Location: |
The Event Centre, camp site and day parking are at Wethead Farm, Newton Dale, Stape. The grid reference is SE 811928. The postcode is YO18 8QN, but please note that if you put this into your satnav it will probably take you to a location that is close to Wethead Farm as the crow flies but is quite a long way round by the roads. The What3words reference of the entrance to the parking field is ///mutual.scorpions.calculating. Click on the link to see a map. You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event. You can also get directions by putting in your starting location. Vehicle access is only possible from the west. Don't try to come via Levisham, as the old Forestry Commission road that used to link across the forest is now closed. If approaching from the south, leave the A170 in Pickering at the traffic lights by Lidl, signposted Town Centre / Newton on Rawcliffe. Stay on this road (Stape Road) through Newton and Stape. The event will be signed from the junction of Stape Road and Middle Head Road at grid reference SE 792936. The roads north of Pickering are generally quiet, but they are narrow and the last few kilometres have long sections of single track road. Please allow sufficient time.
There will be no vehicle exit from the camping field between 9 a.m.
and 11:30 a.m. (except for emergencies). The Day Parking charge is £2 per vehicle. Please have the correct change available as you arrive at the event.
Terrain: |
The competition area consists of mixed forestry plantation with plenty of slopes, some of which are very steep. There are some crags and boulders, some tracks and paths, and some areas with intricate contour detail. There are no uncrossable fences or crossing points. Runnability is variable. In particular, open areas are generally overgrown and slow at this time of year. The courses have been designed to avoid areas of historical and environmental sensitivity. In particular, please be careful not to disturb or damage any cairns that are not used as control sites. There are a lot of ticks in the area. Please check yourself carefully after your run and remove any ticks without delay. They can carry some rather nasty diseases.

If you "run up" then you will be assumed to be competing in the age class closest to your age class unless you contact the Organiser no later than 8 p.m. on Friday 25-Aug-2023 to indicate that you wish to compete in a different age class. For example, an M65 running the Short Brown course will be assumed to be competing as an M50 unless he indicates that he wishes to compete as an M45. Note: The White Rose Trophies and prizes are awarded the basis of on the cumulative times for Saturday's Middle Distance event and Sunday's Classic Distance event.
