Dale Town Moor is 5 miles north-east of Thirsk, easily accessed from the A19.  The event will signed from Sneck Yate Bank 1 mile north-east of Boltby village at grid reference SE 504872.  The nearest postcode is YO7 2DY (but please note that this is in Boltby village) and the What3words reference is ///kitten.champions.animator.

We are accessing the moor from High Paradise Farm and parking in their winter parking field.  Please follow the one way system along the single track road leading to and through the farm.

Click on this link to see a map of the one way system.  After turning off Sneck Yate Bank you have a long uphill drive on a single track road.  Eventually you will come to High Paradise Farm.  Continue past the farm buildings and then turn right into the parking field.  Please follow the directions from the parking marshall, as space is quite tight.

When you leave, turn right out of the parking field and then right again on to Hambleton Lane, which takes you back to Sneck Yate Bank.  Please note that the lane between the parking field and Hambleton Lane will be used by competitors walking to the Start and back from the Finish.

On both the way in and the way out – and particularly in and near High Paradise Farm – please drive very carefully and be aware of and courteous to walkers, cyclists and horse riders.  And bear in mind that the Cleveland Way passes through High Paradise Farm.

Normally the farm is only accessible by walking or cycling to it.  Please recognise our privilege in being able to drive to this remote place!

IMPORTANT NOTE:  We only have space for 45 cars in the parking field, and we're relying on some early starters leaving before later starters arrive.  So:-

• Please share transport if at all possible.
• If you start early then, unless you're going to visit the High Paradise cafe (see below), please depart promptly after you finish your run.
• If you're planning to start late, please don't arrive earlier than you need to.
• The online entry system will ask you to indicate if you are going to drive to the event.  Only the driver needs to say 'yes'.

Dale Town Moor is fast moorland with numerous pits and depressions, requiring careful compass and pacing skills.

Do not cross any walls or fences.  If you do, you're going out of the competition area.

The Cleveland Way runs along the west edge of the moor. area.

Note: The competition area is exposed moorland, and in the event of bad weather it's possible that cagoules may be made compulsory.  Please come prepared.

IMPORTANT:  One dangerous rocky pit will be ringed in purple on the map (see the map extract to the right) and will be taped off on the ground using yellow-and-black hazard warning tape.  Do not cross this tape.  Also, please note that there is no need to go down into any of the pits or small depressions during your run.  There are no controls at the bottom of any of them.  (If a pit or depression is used as a control site, the control will be at the edge of the feature, not inside it.)

Note:  There are a few tags remaining from earlier provisional tagging of potential control sites.  These are being removed, but some may remain at the time of the event.  So, if you find a blue and white tag where you're hoping to find a control, don't assume that the control has gone missing.  The final control site tagging for this event uses red tags.

1:7,500 scale with 5m contours.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose copies will be available separately.

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the old-fashioned way at the Start and Finish.

You can arrange to hire an SI-card (£1 for Seniors, 50p for Juniors) by adding the request to your entry in Racesignup.  Please collect your hired SI-card from Download before your run and return it as you download after your run.  Take care of your hired SI-card, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.

A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day.

There will be no entry on the day.  If you wish to participate in this event you must pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.

The entry deadline is midnight on Sunday 5‑Nov‑2023.  After that, wou will still be able to enter until midnight on Thursday 9-Nov-2023, but there will be a late entry surcharge of £2 for Seniors and your choice of course may be limited by map availability.

Subject to the availability of spare maps, Juniors can do a second run for free.

If you'd like to do a second run:

• Make sure you start your first run early enough to finish a second run before the courses close (at 1 p.m.)
• Register for your second run when you Download after your first run.

10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.         Courses close at 1 p.m.

The Start will be about 400 metres from the parking area.  Allow 10 minutes steady walk.  Please take care when walking along the lane between the parking area and the moor, as this will also be used by vehicles exiting from the event.

Toilets will be available in High Paradise Farm.  Go round the outside of the farm buildings, through the arch into the courtyard, across the courtyard and in through the door on the other side.

The High Paradise Farm cafe will be open between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

First aid at Download.

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

• Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
• Maintain good hand hygiene.
• Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.
