Newcomers to orienteering:   Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!

Location:

Parking will be along the verge of the Aislaby Quarry access road, off Moor Lane, Aislaby, just south of the A171 about 8 km west of Whitby.

Turn off Moor Lane on to the quarry access road at grid reference NZ 851088.  The What3words reference is ///sweeper.sparkles.declining.  The nearest postcode is YO21 1SP but please note that this is in Aislaby Village, a short distance to the south-west of the event.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

If coming from the west, turn right off the A171 at the Aislaby turning, shortly after passing the top of Skelder Hill.

If coming from the east (i.e. from Whitby), turn left off the A171 at the second Aislaby turning, about 8 km west of Whitby.

After about 200 metres, turn right on to the quarry access road.

Please park carefully on the verge as directed by marshals.

Download (and the toilet) will be on an area of hard standing adjacent to the access road.  If you haven't passed it on your way in, walk further along the access road until you come to it.

Terrain:

Despite the name, 90% of Aislaby Moor is self-generated and unmanaged broadleaf woodland.

All the courses will use the beautiful runnable forest.  All except Yellow will visit old (ancient!) quarry workings with high cliffs and rock detail, and all except Yellow and Orange will visit open fields.

Please note that:-

  • The Yellow course uses a path that skirts the top of high cliffs.  Parents should shadow children if they are in any doubt about their ability to follow this path safely.
  • The Orange course visits some steep and craggy areas.
  • Motorcycle trials/enduro events have created confusing new paths in places.  It is impossible to map these clearly.
  • Developing summer undergrowth will be significant in a few places, but the courses have been planned to avoid it where possible.
  • Take care in the vicinity of the high cliffs and go very carefully on stony ground (particulary relevant for the Blue course).
  • For your own safety and theirs, please be alert for speedy mountain bikers.
  • The area is also used by dog walkers.  Please be courteous to members of the public who are sharing the area with us.

Covid-19
and other
respiratory
infections:

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus – continue to circulate in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

  • Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle while participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
