Dale Town Moor
on Sunday 25th August 2024

Location:

Dale Town Moor is 5 miles north-east of Thirsk, easily accessed from the A19.  The grid reference is SE 503888, and the What3words reference of the entrance to the parking field is ///unsightly.streetcar.polite.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

We are accessing the moor from High Paradise Farm and parking in their field.  Please follow the one way system along the single track road leading to and through the farm.  Click on this link to see a map of the one way system.  After turning off Sneck Yate Bank you have a long uphill drive on a single track road.  Eventually you will come to High Paradise Farm.  Continue past the farm buildings and then turn right into the parking field.

When you leave, turn right out of the parking field and then right again on to Hambleton Lane, which takes you back to Sneck Yate Bank.  Please note that the lane between the parking field and Hambleton Lane will be used by orienteers walking back from the moor.

On both the way in and the way out – and particularly in and near High Paradise Farm – please drive very carefully and be aware of and courteous to walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

The farm is normally only accessible by walking or cycling to it.  Please recognise our privilege in being able to drive to this remote place!

Programme:

The coaching day will kick off at 10 a.m. and wrap up just before 2 p.m.

We'll start with compass and pacing skills, and complete different exercises and courses before having lunch at 11:45 a.m.  Please bring your own lunch or use the High Paradise Farm cafe, which will be open.

During lunch, we'll have a control descriptions challenge – brush up on your knowledge with Maprunner beforehand! – and there will also be a small game for those who finish sooner.

We'll start again at 12:30 p.m. with a short session on aiming off, before putting it all together for a Peg Relay with forking and courses suitable for a range of different abilities.

All controls will be just kites.  There will be no punching system.  We'll trust you to be honest about whether you've found the controls!

This coaching day is suitable for all abilities.  We're focusing on skills that can be taught to novices, but experienced orienteers will also benefit from the practice.  Dale Town Moor is a perfect area to try new skills, the coaches and other club members will be around to help, and you'll never be very far from our gathering point.

Please bring your compass if you have one.  If not, we have some spares.

The training area is exposed moorland.  If the weather is bad – or if it looks as if it might be bad – please come prepared.  (Waterproof jacket, warm clothing, etc.)

Terrain:

Dale Town Moor is open moorland with numerous pits and depressions.

Don't cross any walls or fences.  If you do, you're going out of the training area and off the map!

If you have a relevant medical condition, please inform the Organiser at the start of the session.
