Information relevant to both days
Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

Courses:

The Sunday event is the NE Orienteering Championships.  To qualify, you must be a member of an NEOA club and you must run a course for which you are eligible.  Most people will run the course allocated to their age class, but you can "run up" if you wish to do so.

To qualify for an October Odyssey trophy you must run the same course on both days and it must be a course for which you are eligible.

Note:  If you run the course allocated to your age class you will be assumed to be competing in your age class.  If you "run up", you will need to specify, before the event, which age class you are competing in.  For example, an M60 running the Brown course can't wait until after the results are available before deciding whether to compete as an M21, M35, M40, M45 or M50!

For satnavs, the nearest postcode is YO22 5JE.  This will take you to the May Beck car park, which is on the way from the Red Gate corner to the event parking.

Parking will be along the edge of forest tracks.  The assembly area will be at What3words reference ///quickly.craziest.rewarding.

Terrain:

Coniferous forest of mixed age and runnability, with a good ride and track network.

The undergrowth – which is still at its summer height – is as shown on the map.  The areas shown as "undergrowth – slow run" are mainly ferns, bilberry and long grass.  The areas shown as "undergrowth – difficult to run" are mainly bracken.  There are very few brambles.

Some ditches are entrenched and the 'trench' symbol – two parallel black lines – has been used where appropriate.  The ditches are still crossable, but take care.

Graystone Moor on Sunday 6th October 2024
Location:

Graystone Moor is on the west side of the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road, about 4 miles south of Whitby.

Please approach the event from the south, as described in the directions below, in order to avoid having to turn right across fast-moving traffic on the A171.

The entrance to the parking area is at grid reference NZ 924053.  The nearest postcode is YO22 4PR, but please note that this is on the other (east) side of the A171.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

If you're coming via the A171 from Teesside, as you arrive in Whitby turn right (south) at the roundabout just past the petrol station on the left to take the B1416 towards Ruswarp.  In Ruswarp, cross the river and continue along the B1416 for aother 4.7 miles to reach the junction between the B1416 and the A171 (Sneaton Corner).  There, turn left (north) on the A171.  After 1.2 miles, turn left into the parking field.

If you're coming via the A169 from York, just after crossing the River Esk turn right on to the B1410 towards Ruswarp.  At the T-junction in Ruswarp, turn right on to the B1416 and then follow the directions above.

Please take great care leaving the event.  The A171 is likely to be busy, and most vehicles will be travelling at 60 mph.  As you exit from the parking field, please turn left on to the A171 towards Whitby.

Parking will be in a farmer's field.  There will not be any parking marshalls.  Please park sensibly and tidily, and be aware of other people around you when you get out of your car.

Terrain:

Graystone Moor consists of open moorland with mixed runnability.  Heather dominates on the higher parts of the moor.  On the lower parts of the moor, the heather is more patchy and grass becomes more dominant.  Apart from one lovely pine copse, there are few trees – just a few in the valleys.  The area slopes down towards the north-west and the land is dissected by many small valleys that offer interesting contour detail.

The marshes in the middle part of the moor often become significant bogs as they drain into the valleys.  Some of these bogs are uncrossable and are marked Out Of Bounds on the map.

There are a few hazardous cliffs, some of which will have yellow hazard tape above them.

Apart from the 'Coast to Coast Walk' path that crosses the moor, there are few paths.  There are some sheep paths, some of which have been mapped as 'less distinct paths'.

There are no clothing restrictions – so you can run in shorts if you wish –but be aware of occasional scratchy heather and ticks.  Also be aware that sheep droppings can transmit E. coli and please be aware of adder bite symptoms.

Also, please note that this is an exposed area.  Wear kit appropriate to the weather conditions and temperature.

Sorry.  There will not be a White course at this event due to the unsuitability of the terrain.

At the start of the Yellow and Orange courses, competitors will need to follow an indistinct path running along beside a very obvious fence.

There may be a taped route – red-and-white tapes – on the Orange course depending on how clear a path becomes as the summer growth dies back.

Map:

Scale 1:10,000   A4 size.

The maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

The control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Starts:

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.         Courses close at 2:30 p.m.

The Start will be about 200m from the stile between the parking field and the competition area.  Allow 5 - 10 minutes steady walk. The Finish will be about 200m from the stile (in a different direction).
