Autumn Short Race Series event in

Saltburn

This is the second event in CLOK's 2025 Autumn Short Race Series.

Newcomers to orienteering:   Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!

Location:

Enquiries and Download will be in the Saltburn Valley Gardens Woodland Centre at What3words reference ///vent.tasks.repair.

The recommended parking is along Albion Terrace, which runs along the western edge of Valley Gardens.

Please note that there will be no orienteering signs to this event.

To reach Enquiries, Download and the Start, please take the path that descends into the woods a short distance south of the children's play park.

Terrain:

The competition area is in two sections.  All courses visit the Valley Gardens, a beautifully restored Victorian park in a steep-sided valley, with many paths and steps, ornamental gardens and buildings.  The Youth / Vet and Open courses will also go outside Valley Gardens and visit the seafront, including the promenade (with steeply sloping bank and paths above), the pier and various attractions.

The river in Saltburn Valley Gardens must only be crossed at the bridges – no wading!

Important: Full leg cover is mandatory on all courses.  No shorts, please.

As always, please be considerate to other users of the area.

Courses:

There will be three courses available, with winning times of about 20 - 25 minutes:

Open  2.7 km    85m climb 
Youth / Vet (M/W18- and M/W55+)    1.9 km55m climb
Junior (M/W14-)1.0 km35m climb

Important:  Anyone under that age of 16 on the day of the event who wishes to run the Open course or the Youth / Vet course must be accompanied by an adult.  (Under-16s can run the Juniors course unaccompanied.)

Scale 1:4,000   5m contours

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Punching system:

This event will use SPORTident electronic punching.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

SI-cards will be available to hire on the day for a charge of £1.  Please take care of your hired SI-card, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.

Entries:

If you wish to participate in this event, please pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.

The entry deadline is midnight on Thursday 20‑Nov‑2025.

There will be very limited entry on the day subject to the availability of maps (and, of course, the late entry surcharge) ..... but please make every effort to pre-enter if you possibly can.

Times:

Starts: 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.     Courses close at 12:45 p.m.

The Start is on the grass in front of the tea rooms, which are just behind the Woodland Centre.  The Finish is close to the Start.

Second run: You can run a second course for free, subject to map availability.  Register when you download after your first run, and please start your first run early enough to enable you to finish your second run before the courses close at 12:45 p.m.

Facilities:

There are toilets in the Woodland Centre and public toilets in the Cat Nab car park at the bottom of Saltburn Bank.

First aid at Download.

Please either bring your own refreshments or, preferably, visit the Victorian Tea Rooms for coffee and cakes.  The tea rooms, which are planning to be open on the day of the event, are located by the Italian Gardens, immediately behind the Woodland Centre.  Please noet that the tea rooms are cash only.

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway should be open on the day of the event, but must not be used during your run (!).  Please go for a ride afterwards!
Unfortunately, the Miniature Railway in Saltburn Valley Gardens is closed for the winter.

Dogs: Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event and can be taken out into the competition area, but if you do this then please be very careful not to cause a hazard for other competitors or members of the public.

Photography: Anyone taking photos or videos at this event must do so in accordance with CLOK's Photography and Filming Policy.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

CLOK recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup or inform the Organiser before you go out for your run.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
