This is the second of four Summer Series events taking place between June and August 2021.
Covid-19:

This event is being run in accordance with the British Orienteering guidance for resumption of orienteering in England.  In order to participate in this event you must agree to comply with the Participant Code of Conduct.

Key points in the Code of Conduct are:-

  • You must not take part in any form of orienteering if you should be self-isolating under the current Government guidance; e.g. if you or any member of your household have had recent Covid-19 symptoms.
  • Minimise contact with people from outside your household before, during and after your run.  Practice social distancing at all times, including before and after your run as well as when you are out on your course.  Take particular care to keep the required distance from other people in the vicinity of the Start, at download and when passing other competitors or members of the public on narrow paths, going through gates, etc.
  • Do not congregate in groups at the event.
Note: We realise that socialising is an important part of the orienteering experience, but please don't stay around in the car parking area after your run to chat to other orienteers.  If you do want to socialise, please go somewhere else ...... and please make sure that you comply with the current Government and Local Authority guidelines.
Location:

Parking is in the Cobblers Hall car park in Newton Aycliffe.  The grid reference of the entrance to the car park is NZ 271261 and the What3words reference is ///tanked.described.boss.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions by putting your starting location into the 'starting point' box.

You are advised to park at the south end of the car park if possible so that you're not too close to the Start when you start the MapRun app on your smartphone or Garmin watch.  If you have to park near the north end of the car park it might be an idea to walk to the south part of the car park to start the MapRun app.

Terrain:

The competition area is quiet residential parts of the County Durham village of Newton Aycliffe and Woodham.  All the courses involve crossing roads which can be busy.  Please take care when crossing roads.

IMPORTANT:  Any participant under 16 years old on the day of the event must be accompanied by an adult during their run.

Please be courteous to members of the public in the competition area. In particular, please run wide round blind corners and be aware that an elderly member of the public may be coming the other way.

Courses:
Newton Aycliffe North VOC Long~6.3 km     45m climb    24 controls
Newton Aycliffe North VOC Medium     ~3.2 km     40m climb    14 controls
Newton Aycliffe North VOC Short~2.0 km     15m climb    10 controls

In the MapRun6 app, Select Event and look for your preferred course under UK / County Durham / Newton Aycliffe.

Map:

Scale 1:7,500 for the Long course.   1:5,000 for the Medium and Short courses.   All the maps are A4 size.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map, and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Punching system:

This is a Virtual Orienteering Event.  There will be kites marking the Start and Finish, but apart from that there will be no kites or SI boxes in the terrain.  Instead, you can use either the MapRun6 app on your smartphone (or Garmin watch) to record your progress around your course or use your GPS watch to create a GPX track of your route and, after the event, upload the track to the MapRun web site for checking.  Follow this link for more information about Virtual Orienteering and the MapRun6 app.  If you have any more questions, please ask the Organiser, either at the event or beforehand.

IMPORTANT:  As this event is not using SI punching, we will not be able to use the event management software to check for missing runners.  Please make sure that your name is ticked off on the list at the Start (so that we know that you've gone out on your course) and the list at the Finish (so that we know that you've returned safely).

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no Registration at the event.  If you wish to participate in this event you must pre-enter via the CLOK online entry system.  Entries close at midnight on Sunday 11-Jul-2021.
