This is the second race of the Autumn Short Race Series held between November and December 2023. Newcomers to orienteering: Help and advice will be available at this event. Just come along and ask! Cleveland Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders are welcome to come along and give orienteering a try. | ||||||||||||

Raven Gill Scout Camp is on the edge of the village of Commondale in the North York Moors. The grid reference is NZ 662105, the postcode is YO21 2HG and the What3words reference of the entrance to the scout camp is ///optimists.palms.migrants. Click on the link to see a map. You can switch to Satellite mode and zoom in to see the details of the final approach to the car park. You can also get directions if you specify your starting location. From the A171 between Guisborough to Whitby, just east of Lockwood Beck reservoir, turn south following signs to Hutton-le-Hole and Castleton. After 2.2 miles, turn right following the sign to Commondale. At the bottom of a very steep bank, you enter the village. As you go through the village (which is very small) you will drive past the Cleveland Inn Pub on your left and then pass a couple of cottages on your right. Just after the cottages, turn right into a lane. After crossing a small metal bridge you will come to the Raven Gill Camp main gate on your right. Drive through the gate closing it behind you and continue along the track for about 200m to get to the event car park. | |||||||||||
Terrain: | Raven Gill Scout Camp is located on the site of the former Commondale Brick Works. The Scout Camp buildings are scattered across the site, which is now primarily sheep-grazed grassland with scattered trees in a shallow stream-drained valley. The buildings are linked by gravel tracks. There are some steep banks and small crags around the western edges of the site, plus a small area of more complex contours. There is a small area of woodland at the head of the valley. | |||||||||||

Punching system: |
This event will use SPORTident electronic punching. The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish. You can arrange to hire an SI-card (for a charge of £1) by adding the request to your entry in Racesignup. Please collect your hired SI-card from Download before your run and return it as you download after your run. Take care of your hired SI-card, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it. | |||||||||||

Starts: 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Courses close at 1 p.m. The Start is about 5 minutes' walk from the car park. | |||||||||||

There will be no entry on the day. If you wish to participate in this event you must pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system. The entry deadline is midnight on Thursday 23‑Nov‑2023.
You can run a second course for free, subject to map availability. Register when you download after your first run. If you intend to do a second run, please start your first run early enough to enable you to finish your second run before the courses close at 1 p.m. | |||||||||||
Facilities: |
Toilets near Download, which will be in the Centenary Centre buildings about 5 minutes walk to the east of the car park. First Aid at Download. There will be a tuck shop, selling cold drinks and confectionery, in the Centenary Centre buildings. | |||||||||||
Dogs: | Sorry. Dogs are not allowed on to the Raven Gill Scout Camp, as there are sheep grazing on the site. If you need to bring your dog to this event, please park outside the Scout Camp on the grassy area opposite the main entrance, leave your dog in your car (with a window slightly open for ventilation) and walk into the Scout Camp. | |||||||||||

Covid 19 and other infections e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate in the community. Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport. However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities. Please:-

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk. Orienteering is an adventure sport your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility. CLOK recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event. Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course. If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup. Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time. |
