Location: |
Enquiries / Download and the competition area will be accessed via Roseberry Lane, which runs east from Newton under Roseberry towards Roseberry Topping. Please park in either the North York Moors Park Authority car park just south of Newton under Roseberry or in the Council car park just north of the village. Roseberry Lane runs along the northern edge of the Park Authority car park. From the Council car park, it's a 500 metre walk on a pavement through Newton under Roseberry village to the entrance to Roseberry Lane. Follow this link to see a map of the car parks. The grid reference of the entrance to Roseberry Lane is NZ 570128 and the What3words reference is ///detective.education.mulls. The nearest postcode is TS9 6QS. Click on the link to see a map. You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event. You can also get directions if you specify your starting location. The North York Moors Park Authority car park has 86 spaces, but please remember that we'll be sharing it with members of the public. Pay and display charges are £5.50 for stays of over two hours. The Council car park has 25 spaces. Pay and display charges are £4.80 for stays of over three hours. Do NOT park in the 'Residents Only' layby between the two public car parks, as this is anti-social and may well attract a fine. IMPORTANT ADVICE: The car parks are popular with walkers, and the Controller has reported that the larger Park Authority one was pretty much full by about 11 a.m. on a recent Saturday morning. You are advised to arrive earlier rather than later. Please note that there will be no signage to this event, as the car park owners don't want us to sign their car parks (and wouldn't let us reserve any spaces). We have reduced the entry fees for this event to offset the requirement for competitors to pay the parking charges. Please share transport wherever possible, as this will reduce your parking costs per person and leave more space for other orienteers. You are welcome to cycle to this event. (Please take care on the A173, although it is more 'cyclist friendly' now that it has a 40 mph speed limit.) You will be able to lock your bike to a fence near Download, and you can leave a bag at the back of the Download tent while you're out on your run. Enquiries / Download will be on the north side of Roseberry Lane, about 100 metres from the north end of the larger Park Authority car park.
Terrain: |
The competition area consists of sloping mixed woodland on the slopes of the northern edge of the North York Moors facing towards Guisborough and open moorland on the moor top on the sides facing Roseberry Topping. There is significant bracken growth on the moorland, but it should have died back a bit by November. Notes:-
This event involves going out on to open moorland in mid-November. If there is inclement weather then cagoules may be compulsory. Please bring suitable clothing and look out for notices at the exits to the car parks.
Courses: |
The Red course has been planned to be suitable for runners with limited navigational experience. It should give you a 'good run out' with enough navigation to keep things interesting.
Map: |
Scale 1:7,500 5m contours Mapped by Paul Taylor in 2021 using Lidar data. The control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and loose copies will be available at the Start.
Punching system: |
This event will use SPORTident electronic punching. The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish. If you need to hire an SI-card, please order it via the online entry system there is a £1 hire charge and collect it from Download before your run. Remember to return it as you download, and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it. A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day, but please pre-order via the online entry system if at all possible.
Entries: |
If you wish to participate in this event, please pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.
The entry deadline is midnight on Sunday 3‑Nov‑2024. After that, you will still be able to enter until midnight on Thursday 7‑Nov‑2024, but there will be a £2 late entry surcharge for Seniors and your choice of course may be limited by map availability. There will be very limited entry on the day subject to the availability of maps and a late entry surcharge of £2.00 for Seniors ..... but please make every effort to pre-enter if you possibly can.
Starts: |
10:30 a.m. - 12 noon Courses close at 2:30 p.m. The Start will be about 1.6 km from Enquiries / Download. Walk east along Roseberry Lane, go through the gate and follow the marked path up into the woods. This relatively long walk to the Start is to reduce the amount of climb on the courses. IMPORTANT NOTE: At the pre-Start, you will be handed your folded map. You will then climb a steep slope to reach the Start kite and timing box. Only look at your map after you have punched the Start box. (There will be a marshall checking that competitors comply with this rule.) This slightly unusual start arrangement is to avoid competitors having to run up the very steep and potentially muddy / slippery route at the start of their courses.
Facilities: |
Public toilets in the North York Moors Park Authority car park. No drinks will be provided. There are several good cafes in Great Ayton and a very pleasant pub in Newton under Roseberry.
Dogs: | Well behaved dogs are welcome in the car parking area, but must not be taken out on the courses.
