Location: |
Parking will be in a sheep grazing field near the NW corner of Hutton Mulgrave and Skelder Woods. The nearest postcode is YO21 3TW and the entrance to the parking field is at What3words reference ///stumps.fancied.allowable. Click on the link to see a map. You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event. You can also get directions if you specify your starting location. The event will be signed from the A171 Guisborough to Whitby road at Lady Cross (between the two Egton exits at What3words reference ///chainsaw.tricky.unwound). In case you miss the orienteering sign, the road sign is to 'Hutton Mulgrave, East Barnby'. After turning off the A171, follow the narrow and winding lanes for 3km to the parking field. Traffic arriving from the Pickering / Scarborough / Whitby direction can also access the event via Skelder Road turn north off the A171 near Aislaby but this will not be signed. Please note that the A171 can be busy, and vehicles tend to move at high speed. Be very careful if you are turning across traffic, either when you arrive or when you leave. Visibility is good at Lady Cross, but if you are heading towards Guisborough after the event please consider turning left on to the A171 and driving 3km to the main A171A169 roundabout, which provides a safe turning point. There is plenty of space for parking, but please note that parts of the field may be quite soft and we will be sharing the field with grazing sheep. No dogs are allowed in the parking field. There will be a £1 parking fee. Please have the correct change ready as you arrive. Enquiries / Download will be in a tent near the entrance to the parking field.
Terrain: |
This is one of CLOK's premier orienteering areas. It was used for the JK in 1996 and the British Orienteering Championships in 2024. The woods are in two contrasting parts. The western part is coniferous plantation with variable runnability. There is a network of rides and tracks. Many of the rides have tussocks and deep ruts, so it may be quicker to stay in he forest. There is a small area used for shooting. You may see red flags in this area, but there will be no shooting on the day of the event. Recent forestry work may result in some of the tracks being churned up. The eastern part is mixed with many mature trees. In recent years, holly growth has reduced visibility and the area has suffered serious wind damage, resulting in constantly shifting paths and some newly felled 'forest giants'. There are some minor streams and marshes. The area is slightly hilly and all courses will have an element of climb.
Courses: |
The Red course has been planned to be suitable for runners with limited navigational experience. It should give you a 'good run out' with enough navigation to keep things interesting. The Yellow course will have a short taped route around a fallen tree that is blocking a path.
