Newcomers to orienteering:
>>  Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!
>> Follow this link for information about orienteering events, including advice on how to select an appropriate course for your level of fitness and navigational experience.
Location:

Parking will be in the Richmond School car parks.  Richmond School is in the north-east part of Richmond, on the south side of the A6108.  If you are coming from Scotch Corner, the school is on the left about 500m after you enter the 30mph limit.  The grid reference is NZ 180014, the postcode is DL10 7BQ and the What3words reference is ///thanks.feasting.softest.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

Terrain: Richmond Town offers an amazing variety of age of architecture, including the medieval castle, a cobbled market place with its narrow passageways, and housing estates ranging from Georgian to modern.  The whole town is on the northern slope of the Swale Valley and there is a climb of 130m from the river to the top of the map.
Courses:

Please note that entries are being taken by class rather than by course.  Most competitors will enter the 'natural' class for their age class – e.g. most M45s will enter the Veteran Men class and run Course B – but adults can run any course they wish.  (Under-16s can also run any course they wish, but if they are running any of courses A – F they must be accompanied by an adult.)

If you wish to 'run up', simply enter a class that is allocated to your preferred course.  For example, a W60 wishing to run Course B could enter the Women Open class.  Competitors who run up will score points in the UK Urban League in the class that they have entered.

If you wish to 'run down', again enter a class that is allocated to your preferred course, even if it seems a bit counter-intuitive. For example, an M45 wishing to run Course H could enter the Young Junior Men class.  Competitors who run down will not score points in the UK Urban League.

Note for M85+  The UK Urban League does not have a separate category for 85+.  If you enter the GranderVeteran Men class (and run Course F) then you will get UKUL points in the HyperVeteran Men (M75+) category, but competitors who run Course F as GranderVeteran Men will be ranked behind all the HyperVeteran Men competitors who complete Course E.

The map for Course A is A3 double sided.  The maps for Courses B - E are A3.  The maps for Courses F - I are A4.

Control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

If you need to hire an SI-card (£1 for Seniors, 50p for Juniors), please order it via the Racesignup online entry system and collect it from Download before your run.  Remember to return it as you download, and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.  A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day, but please pre-order via the online entry system if at all possible.

Entries:

If you wish to participate in this event, please pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.

The entry fees are:
Seniors:£10.00       £2.00 surcharge for non-members of British Orienteering
Juniors / students:   £4.00

The entry deadline is midnight on Sunday 25‑May‑2025.  After that, you will still be able to enter until midnight on Thursday 29‑May‑2025, but there will be a £2 late entry surcharge for Seniors and your choice of course may be limited by map availability.

There will be very limited entry on the day subject to the availability of maps (and, of course, the late entry surcharge) ..... but please make every effort to pre-enter if you possibly can.

Starts:

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.       Courses close at 2 p.m.

There will be two Starts.

The Near Start, which is used by courses G, H and I, is close to the Assembly Area.

The route to the Far Start, which is used by courses A – F, will be taped from the vehicle exit of the car park.  It goes (on the pavement) along beside the main road into town and crosses a busy junction.  Walking time should be about 10 minutes.  Please take care all the way and be aware of traffic at all times.  The Clear, Check and SIAC battery check boxes will be located at the car park exit.  Please make sure that you use them.

The main Finish is in the Richmond School grounds, close to the Assembly Area.

Course F has a remote Finish to avoid a 'dead running' leg at the end of the course.  From the remote Finish, follow the taped route uphill and then turn right to return to Richmond School along beside the main road.  Remember to download when you get back to the school.

Full results, split times, progressograms and RouteGadget will be available at www.clok.org.uk as soon as possible after the event.

Facilities:

The Assembly Area is on the south side of the school, on the patio outside the Dining Hall.  There are lots of benches and tables.

Please note that club tents must not be erected.  This is a condition of our licence to occupy the site.

Two separate sets of toilets will be available at the school.  See the diagram above.

No drinks will be provided.  Please bring your own refreshments or visit one of the many catering establishments in the town centre.

First aid at Download.

Dogs: Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event, but must be kept on a lead at all times.  You can take your dog out on your course provided that you keep it on a short lead and take great care not to cause a hazard to members of the public or other competitors.  (You'll also need to pick up after your dog, of course.)
